I'm not much of a makeup person, but there are two things I always like to have around - red nail polish, and black mascara. As my eyes are very sensitive to any chemicals I always have trouble finding the right mascara for myself. Many store bought kinds cause my eyes to itch and burn. After some research I learned that allergic reactions are common with mascara users. These allergic reactions are usually attributed to chemicals such as methylparaben, butylparaben, aluminum powder etc., which are added to mascara.
I was very excited when one day I found a recipe for an all natural and eye friendly mascara. As you may or may not know mascara dates back to ancient Egypt and is composed of a few quite basic products: pigmentation, oil, and wax.
Ingredients:
2 teaspoons coconut oil
4 teaspoons aloe vera gel
3/4 teaspoon grated beeswax
2 capsules of active charcoal
3 drops of vitamin E oil
mascara containers
As you might have trouble finding active charcoal I would recommend getting it online:
Mascara containers can also be purchased online:
To prepare you very own mascara combine the coconut oil, aloe vera gel, beeswax in a double boiler (or pan placed inside of a bigger pan filled with water). Stir over low heat until the beeswax is melted and well mixed with the aloe vera and coconut oil. Next open the charcoal capsules and pour them into the mixture. Stir until everything is completely incorporated, after that remove from heat. After the mixture has been removed from the heat add vitamin E oil and mix once again. The best way to get the mixture into the mascara containers is by using a long syringe.
