History of silicones in cosmetics

Silicones are one of those products, which cause a lot of controversy in cosmetic industry. Many people search for cosmetics without silicones, without truly understanding the chemistry behind them and their benefits. But that is a post for another time...

Today lets have a quick look at the history of silicones in cosmetics:

  • In 1953 Revlon commercialized a hand cream called Silicare “Silicare forms an invisible glove to protect your hands. Its amazing water-repellent power keeps detergent water away”
  • in the 1960s the use of volatile silicones greatly improved the overall quality of antiperspirant products. Silicones eliminated transfer if antiperspirant salts reducing staining of clothes, a non stinging sensation (no alcohol) and good spreadability
  • in the 1980s the use of silicones expanded to all skin care segments (different feel of products)
  • in the mid 1990s silicone resins combined with volatile silicones were introduced to makeup formulations (the volatile silicones evaporated leaving the pure pigments held in place by a film of silicone resin)
  • in the beginning of 21st century introduction of silicone elastomers (in skin primers, BB creams)
