Borage, also known as the starflower, is an annual herb native to the Mediterranean area, but can be found in many regions of the world. It is a relatively large plant with star shaped bright blue flowers. The leaves of this plant are edible and the seeds are used to produce borage seed oil.
Borage seed oil is considered similar to evening primrose oil. Borage seed oil has a very high contents of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), even higher then evening primrose oil. The high amount of GLA makes this oil very efficient in soothing dry and sensitive skin. It is also a great choice for matured skin due to its anti-aging and wrinkle reducing properties. Borage seed oil helps to restore the hydration and elasticity of the skin. It is also used for anti-inflammatory purposes as in the body GLA is converted into prostoglandini (which help heal inflammation of the skin).
