Jojoba oil comes from the seeds of the jojoba plant (simmondsia chinensis), a shrub native to the Sonoran Desert (Northwest Mexico and Southwest USA). This evergreen plant can grow up to 2 meters and has acorn-shaped fruit, which are hard and have a dark brown color once they are mature. The shrub's deep root system and leathery leaves make it well suited to intense heat and droughts. Jojoba is cultivated for its oil crop in Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Israel, and in the USA.
The oil is yellow or golden in color, as well as odorless, and is regarded as the most favored oil in the carrier oil family because of its advanced molecular stability. Jojoba oil is suitable for use for all skin types. It contains a high amount of vitamins A, E, and F. Due to jojoba oils affinity with our own sebum, it is well absorbed and tolerated by our skin. On the other hand when excess sebum is present, jojoba oil can help dissolve and clean the excess oil.
Jojoba oil is an ingredient in many cosmetic products including lotions, moisturizers, make-up removers, shampoos, hair conditioners, and massage oils. The pure oil itself may also be used on skin and hair. Jojoba oil is used as a replacement for whale oil, which had been used in cosmetics and other industries in the past.
