I've made solid body lotion bars in the past, but most of the recipes that I found online (and the ones I had followed) where based on beeswax. I have nothing against using beeswax in cosmetic products, actually I make all of my lip balms and a few lotions using beeswax as one of the main ingredients. For some reason though I wasn't exactly happy with the lotion bars made with beeswax. It just wasn't exactly what I was looking for.
Therefore I tried to come up with a fairly simple recipe that wouldn't contain beeswax, but also wouldn't get messy the moment I take it in my hands. I made my first batch of lotion bars without beeswax a few weeks ago and have been enjoying using them ever since. Both cocoa butter and cupuacu butter are very hard at room temperature and make a great base for lotion bars. The second batch that I made this weekend is a bit different as I wanted to reduce the amount of ingredients and still enjoy how wonderfully it moisturizes my skin. Since I feel I have succeeded, I would like to share this simple, yet very enjoyable recipe.
Solid body lotion bar recipe
Ingredients:
70 g cocoa butter
20 g cupuacu butter
10 g shea butter
a few drops of sweet almond oil
fragrance of your choice (I used vanilla essential oil and plum fragrance oil which formed an incredible scent combined with the chocolaty and nutty scent of the butters!)
Melt all the butters and add sweet almond oil. Once the mixture has cooled down mix in essential oil/fragrance of your choice (not necessary). Once the mixture is starting to thicken (this will take a while so be patient) pour it into molds of your choice: cupcake molds, soap molds, ice cube tray, or what ever you might have around the house. Once they are completely solid unmold and store in closed container.
One of these vanilla-plum lotion bars is for my friend Linde, I hope she will enjoy it as much as I do :)
I have been searching high and low for a solid lotion bar without beeswax (very difficult!) I want to make a lotion bar with coconut oil and cocoa butter as a the base. Do you think this would work?
ReplyDeleteHi, yes I know it is so hard to find lotion bar recipes without beeswax! Of course it is possible to make a lotion bar using only cocoa butter and coconut oil. Of course you would have to use a large % of the cocoa butter. I would suggest around 10-15% of the coconut oil. And this would depend if you want to use it in the winter or summer time.
DeleteI'll experiment a bit with this in the next day or two and if I come up with the right proportions I'll be sure to post them on my blog. I know such a lotion bar would smell great!
