Honey and green tea extract face cream

Face creams are one of the DIY cosmetic products that I believe I have mastered best. Even if one day I give up making most of my own cosmetic products I am pretty sure I will always make my own face creams. If you have never tried making your own you probably do not known how awesome it is to come up with your own face cream, which is perfect for you skin type and additionally lets you save lots and lots of money (because as we all known a decent face cream can have a very scary price).
The face creams that I make are not exactly difficult to make, but they do require a lot of ingredients...sometimes this can be a problem, especially if you are new to cosmetic making and do not have tons of products lying around in your cupboard. But I promise they are well worth the trouble of buying the ingredients and making!

This honey and green tea extract face cream is a medium heavy cream, and good for all skin types (at least from my own experience and the experience of a few friends and family who have used it). I find it an ideal morning and night cream for the winter season.

Ingredients:

1 tbsp emulsifying wax
11/2 tbsp grapeseed oil
1 tbsp evening primrose oil
1 tsp argan oil
1 tsp rosehip oil
1/2 tsp avocado oil
1 tsp glycerine
1/8 cup distilled water
1/8 cup rose water
11/2 tbsp neroli hydrosol
1 1/2 tbsp aloe vera gel
1/2 tsp organic honey
1/3 tsp green tea powder extract
1/4 tsp vit C powder
6 drops jasmine essential oil
15 drops vit E oil
5 drops vit A oil

Preparation:

What you will need to prepare this cream is a pot with water and two glass jars or some kind of bowls or dish which can be inserted in the pan. In one jar mix the oils and emulsifying wax (but not the vitamin oils and essential oils) and heat up in the pan filled with water until the emulsifying wax has melted completely. Mix everything well. In the second jar mix together the water, hydrosols, glycerine, aloe vera gel, honey and green tea extract. Warm up in the pot to the same temperature as the oil mixture. Next slowly add the water mixture to the oil mixture mixing vigorously all of the time. To make your life easier, and obtain a cream with a nicer structure, you can use a blender for this. Blend the ingredients until the mixture is the structure of a semi heavy cream. This might take a few minutes, usually until the cream has cooled down a bit. Last add the vit C powder, vit A and E oils and jasmine essential oil. You can also replace the jasmine essential oil with some other scent, but be careful to use one which will not irritate the sensitive skin of your face. Mix everything together well. Place your cream into jars and wait until they cool down completely before putting on the lids.

*Important: As you have noticed I do not use any preservatives to make this cream. Vit E is a natural antioxidant, but it is not a preservative so you should keep in mind that the shelf life of this product is not longer then a few weeks. You can add a preservative of your choice if you would like to extend the shelf life. Something that I have observed is that certain aloe vera gels have preservatives in them, so naturally the cream has a longer shelf life due to this.

Honey has natural antioxidant and anti-microbal properties and additionally is a great skin moisturizer

Green tea  is a strong antioxidant and protects the skin from damaging effect of free radicals. Green tea also contains Methylxanthines which stimulate skin microcirculation influencing the tone and health of skin.

  3. How could you make a lighter version of this recipe? I have oiler skin, and do not want anything heavy on my face.
    Thanks,

    1. Hi Annie, thank you for your comment.

If you wanted to make a lighter version of this cream you can leave out the heavier oils (such as avocado oil and argan oil) and substitute them with a lighter one.

Grapeseed oil is a good base for a light cream. So for example you could use in this recipe 3 tbsp grapeseed oil and add 1 tsp evening primrose oil and 1/2 tsp rosehip oil. They are both very good for your skin and low on the list of comedogenic oils so they are recommended for oily skin. All the other ingredients you keep as in the recipe.

I will be posting some recipes for lighter creams on my blog soon so maybe those will be interesting for you as well.

    1. Hi Katie,

in order to make a cream thicker you can add more emulsifying wax to the recipe.
