Some days my hair is tired of surfactants. It's tired of being washed day by day with a shampoo which strips away the natural oils and leaves my hair clean yet in a lot f ways damages. After I switched to natural DIY shampoos based on milder surfactants compared to SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) and aloe vera gel, honey and herbs for a while my hair seemed to be doing really well. It did until about 2 months ago I noticed it was becoming dry and brittle again. I tried modifying the shampoos I make, but still it just wasn't working the way it did at first. I realized that how ever light surfactant I was going to use washing my hair everyday was just not something my hair liked.
And then I though of honey water as an alternative to shampoo. I remember running into a blog article once on a shampoo which was based only on water, honey and essential oils. I had this idea in my head for a long time. At first I based all of my shampoos on honey and finely I decided to try washing my hair with honey only.
Making a natural shampoo doesn't really get any easier than this! All you need is 3 parts of water and 1 part of honey. You can add some essential oils, but I don't. I like the very soft sweet fragrance of honey.
Of course the 'shampoo' is very runny, that is the way it is suppose to be. It looks like water with a honey color. And of course it doesn't foam. But it does clean your hair and scalp magnificently! And it leaves hair very soft and moisturized. At least for my hair I haven't felt the need to use a hair conditioner when I use honey to wash my hair. For the moment I haven't completely switched to honey water as a shampoo, but I do use it every other day or so to give my hair a rest from surfactants. I am very pleased with the results.
How much honey to use for a one time? As I have very thick and long hair I need to use quite a bit of honey for every time I was wash my hair. Usually I tablespoon of honey (and 3 of warm water to dissolve it in).
I apply it on damp hair, massage well into my scalp and the whole length of my hair and rinse out after a minute or two.
An important tip would be that it is best if you prepare this honey water fresh every time you would like to wash your hair. It just takes a minute and it reduces the chances of the product going bad.
I do not know if this works for all hair kinds, but it is great for mine and I hope other people will find this idea useful.
this is such an amazing idea, Anna! My hair doesn't like daily shampooing either, so this can definitely be a great alternative. Anna, you're the best - as always!;-))))
ReplyDeleteMaria, if you try this let me know if it worked well for you. I'm curious how well it works for other hair types.
