Some time back I made a post about a solid lotion bar made without beeswax:
For the moment this turns out to be my most popular post, probably because it is pretty difficult to find lotion bars recipes online without beeswax as one of the ingredients. I have nothing against using beeswax, but somehow solid body lotion bars just didn't feel right for me when I made them with beeswax.
A few days ago I received a comment where one of my readers asked if t would work to make a lotion bar with coconut oil and cocoa butter as the base. Because of this comment I decided to make a coconut oil ad cocoa butter lotion bar without any additional ingredients (no scents added either as it already smells like a chocolate bar so why ruin it, right?).
I got started right away (as in RIGHT away even though it was almost midnight when I read this comment on my blog). A few days later, after trying these out a few times I can say they are a real success!
Ingredients:
85% organic cocoa butter
15% unrefined coconut oil
(If it was summer time I think I would use 90% cocoa butter and 10% coconut oil to make the bar less likely to get to soft in the warm weather).
These took just a few minutes to prepare. I mixed the coconut oil and cocoa butter in a small microwaveable bowl and put it in the microwave for a few minutes until everything was melted.. I let the mixture cool down for about 15 minutes and poured it into cupcake molds (of course you can use any kind of mold you'd like).
And that's it! It doesn't get much easier then that, does it? Best of all these feel great on my skin, smell awesome and I do not have to worry about the expiration date as there is no water in them.
YAY! thanks!! i was just google-ing for something like this and came across this entry! I bought Cocoa Butter today and wanted to try it.
ReplyDeleteI love the smell, you're right - the chocolate smell is awesome. I think you could add peppermint or sweet orange essential oil to compliment it - but I might try it plain.
THANK YOU for posting about this!
Oh yes peppermint or sweet orange essential oil would work great here!
DeleteThank you for your post Bea's Mom!
What about a coffee scent? Would that blend with the chocolate you're talking about? :)
DeleteYes! That is also a great combination!
Deletethis is amazing! thank you for being so awesome and sharing a no-beeswax lotion bar! I was wondering if shea butter and hemp seed oil butter would make a good hard lotion bar?
ReplyDeleteThanks for this wonderful recipe and post. I had made lotion bars with beeswax, and although I loved the beeswax recipe, I was concerned about pesticides and toxins that remain in the beeswax (even with "organic" beeswax). My next batch will be made using your recipe.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try these! How greasy are they? I'm having trouble making a lotion bar that isn't super greasy.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for not responding earlier Angela, I had a long break in blogging. I hope you tried these lotion bars and they worked out for you!?
DeleteI had been infusing oil with coffe for three weeks to make lotion bars with beeswax and hates how greasy they were.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if this would
Work as a bronzing bar as well?
To reduce the greasy feeling you can add starch for example. It helps a bit. But in the end it is a bar made almost purely out of oil/butter so it cannot expect it not to be greasy...
DeleteI'm not sure about the bronzing effects to be honest. I think it is possible, but I guess you just have to try it. Let me know if it works out!
